Time Travel Mafia

General Rules:
1. This is a game. Play to win, but also enjoy yourself.
2. This game only exists online. Keep all discussion in this thread unless your role PM specifies otherwise. In any case, do not discuss this game outside of a quicktopic, unless it is to me. Failure to abide by this rule may result in a modkill.
3. If you need to talk to someone, talk to me. I am always available.
4. You may not edit your posts. Don’t do it.
5. Bold anything you want me to see in thread.
6. All players can vote to lynch another player. You may not vote for yourself. Votes should be cast in the following format: Vote: PLAYERNAME. If your vote is not bolded, it does not count. You may use nicknames and acronyms while voting, so long as I understand who you mean.
7. You may Unvote to remove your vote, but it s not required to change your vote.
8. You may Vote: No Lynch.
9. Lynching or no lynching will require a majority of votes. Once a majority is reached, the decision is final. No further unvotes will be counted. All players except the lynchee may talk until night begins.
10. Once a player is killed, either by lynch or night kill, they must stop posting in the thread. DO NOT post after your death is inevitable.
11. Deadlines are set at two weeks and are negotiable. If at deadline there is no majority, the player with the most votes will be lynched. If there is a tie, the day will end in a no lynch.
12. Nights will last for three days, or possibly longer if they occur over a weekend. All actions must be submitted before the given deadline. You may choose to submit ‘No Action’. If all actions are in, the day may begin early.
13. If any player has not posted for more than two days, they will be prodded. If a player is prodded three times over the course of the game, they will take one fewer vote to lynch.

Game-Specific Rules:
14. All non-town players have falseclaim abilities. From Day 2 onwards, all players may quote role PMs (real or fabricated). However, do not under any circumstances post game-relevant QuickTopic links.
15. Most abilities (specified in your role PM) can target any player on any night. If a player is not available for targeting on the specified night, the ability will have no effect.
16. This game will begin on Night 0, and players with active abilities (with the exception of kills) can use them on this night. No players can be targeted on Night 0.
17. As all time-altering abilities take place at night, days will progress as normal. For the purposes of lynches, the last vote cast by each player is the vote that counts (all previous votes are disregarded). End-of-day votecounts may change throughout the game.
18. If half the living players post Deadline: Retract, the day will end immediately.
19. If a player who was once alive is killed in the past, all their actions and votes are wiped from their personal timeline after their death.
20. If a player who was once dead is retroactively made alive in the past, they will have the opportunity to vote and perform actions in the past (privately by PM).
21. If a player voted or performed an action on another player who was subsequently removed from the timeline, they will have the opportunity to retarget that vote or action; however, if the target returns to that time, the original vote or action takes precedence.
22. If a player did not vote or perform an action at a particular time, and later a new player appears at that time, they will have the opportunity to vote or perform an action; however, they cannot target a player who was originally present.
23. If a paradox ensues, all actions in the cycle will be altered so that they have no origin (essentially, they become actions made by the mod); then as many actions as possible will be replaced by player-based actions. This will result in actions that cannot be removed from the timeline, even if the paradox is later resolved naturally. If one-shot abilities are made absolute in this way, this counts as depleting the one-shot.
24. The game is not over until one faction has won conclusively, even if no players from other factions are alive at a particular time.
25. I am not attempting to conceal the mechanics of time travel; this game is an exercise for you to exploit them. Feel free to ask me to clarify my decisions or ask how I would resolve hypothetical situations.


Please remember that this game is not a regular game of Mafia as such, but an exercise in exploiting the time travel rules. The more thought you put in, the more fun you'll have.

Role PMs are going out. Please confirm via PM with any pregame choices, ASAP. Once all confirmations are in, the game will begin.

Darth and Reverse are both yet to confirm. However, Reverse has picked up his PM and I've sent Darth an email reminding him. Since I'm likely to be taking tomorrow off, I'm going to go ahead and declare the game open. Darth and Reverse can confirm by beginning to post here, and if either of them have pregame actions they can submit them ASAP.

wouldn't telling you my ability come under rule 14 ???

Everyone has confirmed. Congratulations all round.

Just a few notes on how I envision the timeline in this game; it's split into three levels: the 'absolute' level, which is the snapshot of the completed game. That level is the 'goal' we're working towards. If I'm forced to intervene (ie to resolve a paradox), the action is done on that level and cannot be changed.
The next level is the 'continuous' level; essentially the timeline of real life. You, the players, are the consciousnesses of the roles in the game, and exist on this level. Your knowledge is dependent on how much has happened in the game so far.
The lowest level is the 'personal' level; your roles' 'bodies', if you will. This is the level at which actions and votes take place. It is this level that doesn't have to be linear; your 'body' can get thrown all around the timeline.
In summary, you can act with all the knowledge of the game in real time (so perhaps acting with the 'future' known), but your actions are limited by the position of your 'body' in the timeline.

Hopefully that made some kind of sense.

Just pointing it out, just because darth gets two votes does not mean that he is not scum.

Why do we want people to claim their abilities? Scum are only going to lie, so unless someone has an investigate ability we can't tell truth from lie.

I want to know why nobody but Alex voted. I didn't vote because I decide randomly before making my first post if I am to vote or not. This occurs before checking my role pm in most cases. What's your excuse?

true ... scum could easily use it as a tool to save themselves (even the votes) or lynch a townie (thus only requiring 3 people to vote rather than 4)
