CHOICE 8:

Unsubstantiated Existence of Essential Particles Dilemma

ROOM 1:

In Room 1 you have the proof for the existence of the Higgs-Boson particle. If you don't open the door to Room 1 by the end of the week its discoverer and all his papers taken on the subject will be destroyed in a catastrophic fire and the proof of the existence of the Higs-Boson particle is lost forever.

ROOM 2:

In Room 2 you have the proof for the existence of the W.I.M.P. If you don't open the door to Room 2 by the end of the week its discoverer and all his papers taken on the subject will be destroyed in a catastrophic meteor collision and all the proof for the existence of the W.I.M.P. Will be lost forever.

Question: what's the WIMP? (I may yet look it up on Wikipedia)
Tentative vote for the Higgs.

It doesn't mean it can't be proved to exist again - and it's not being erased from people's minds (is it?).

You can find wimps everywhere.

From past experience, I think it will be erased. I read some Physics books recently (written circa 2006) that said 'within weeks of operation the LHC will have definitively proved the existance or nonexistance of the Higgs boson.' Yeah.

You (Darth) are assuming that the HB is the only true and correct explanation for some quantum phenomena, when in fact it is just a theory. Using the other (unerased) pieces of the puzzle, a theory of "everything" ( or at least "mostly everything") could be created.

W.I.M.P

Weakly interacting massive particles

In astrophysics, weakly interacting massive particles or WIMPs, are hypothetical particles serving as one possible solution to the dark matter problem. These particles interact through the weak nuclear force and gravity, and possibly through other interactions no stronger than the weak force. Because they do not interact with electromagnetism they cannot be seen directly, and because they do not interact with the strong nuclear force they do not react strongly with atomic nuclei.

This combination of properties gives WIMPs many of the properties of neutrinos, save for being far more massive and therefore slower.

I probably don't care either way but W.I.M.P sounds cooler so save W.I.M.P and destroy the Higgs Boston particle

Thanks, King.

Yeah, get on with it.

I'll still vote Higgs; from what I understand, Higgs explains a lot, while losing WIMP doesn't mean sacrificing what we already know.

You are divided you cannot come to a conclusion and so the proof for both particles is destroyed forever. You had a chance to make a significant contribution to the progression of science and our understanding of the universe but you blew it you should all be ashamed of yourselves.

CHOICE 9:

For The Benefit Of Humanity

ROOM 1:

In Room 1 you have legislation aiming to reduce world population, that will place a limit on the amount of births that can happen in a country each year if you pass this legislation all babies born after the limit is reached will be killed and the parents fined but the world population will decrease to sustainable levels and climate change will slow. If you don't open this room by the end of the week you save many many babies.

ROOM 2:

In Room 2 you have legislation aiming to introduce new genetically modified cattle and food crops which will ensure enough food is produced on currently cultivated land for another 500 years but eventually expansion must continue. If you don't open this door by the end of the week you will kill many many babies.

And if we want legislation (although I'm not sure how much scope "legislation" has over the actions of the world), we can bring it in the normal way - through protracted and endlessly circular "debate".

This is meant to be a choice between the continuation of humanity indefinitely by the destruction of a basic right or the eventual destruction of humanity but the preservation of rights if you don't choose either you just destroy all things (including all the babies) all the more quickly.

Um, kinda obvious, isn't it? Open room 2. That gives us 500 years for things to be sorted out for the next stage.

Actually, on reread, that does seem kind of obvious. Lots of food for 500 years? Then we expand...where's the caveat? Unless you have some objection to GM crops...

As you open Room 2 and Room 1 bursts into flames you have chosen to save the human race for a mere 500 years at no consequence instead of indefinitely at great consequence therefore just putting off a greater consequence for 500 years until the human race begins to expand upon its limitations again and create total devastation upon the earth's resources leading not only to the death of many many babies but also many many adults and many many species of animal.

ROOM 1:

In Room 1 you have the human race if you don't open this door by the end of the week the human race in all its entirety will be destroyed.
